Expressive Kinetic Typography

Song: Dreams - Fleetwood Mac

Video editor: Jeremy Whervin

For my university course “Motion Graphics and Time-Based Media”, we were tasked with creating a dynamic kinetic typography animation inspired by the lyrics of a song. The assignment aimed to develop my skills in synchronising text with audio, experimenting with expressive typography, and conveying emotions through motion.

Project Overview

The song I chose for this project, 'Dreams' is a song depicting a woman going through the process of watching her lover leave her for another woman. The first verse gives insight to how she feels about the situation, which isn't the typical sadness one would come to expect. Rather she has accepted the situation as she knows her worth, this is a sort of “don't give up your home for a hotel” situation. Despite the topic of the song, it doesn't feel like a 'sad' song because of the warmth that the instruments and the vocals provide, which is appropriate considering the lyrics don't portray any direct sadness, regret, guilt or anxiety. Because the song is originally from the 70s, I went with a warm 70s colour palette to fit the vibe.
