For the university course “Understanding the Media”, our groups were tasked with creating a digital product like a podcast or magazine, and using said product to explain one of the theories of communication. Our group chose the theory of uses and gratifications and used a docu-series focused on the employment of social media as a tool by our politicians during the most recent 2020 general elections and how it aided their campaigns.
Power of Media ep.1
Before the 2020 General Elections
Writer: Ashanti Linton
Voice: Toni-Ann Harris
Video editor: Jeremy Whervin
Project Overview
This episode focused on the antics and fanfare leading up to the elections. The public had already been anticipating the announcement of general elections and discussing their feelings on social media. Politicians took this an opportunity to begin campaigning on social media taking advantage of a lot of the budding online trends in Jamaica.
This episode has better quality footage in most areas, but I notice some issues with the audio in this video. The voice is low especially in comparison to the music used throughout the video. I am quite pleased with the use of the music in this video as well as the editing techniques, as it creates the correct atmosphere for the topic of this video and its place in the story. The transitions could definitely use some polish, however.
